Shine Homeschool - Introduction to Discover Coding I

Program for Shine Homeschool students ONLY.

INTRO TO DISCOVER CODING I – Ages 6-9

This is for kids ages 6-9. We will introduce kids to coding and how to create with technology. Kids will have fun learning to problem solve and express creativity with technology, building apps, logic-based games and puzzles.

We teach early coding concepts and problem solving using a combination of plugged and unplugged activities. They will have so much fun they won’t even realize they are building new skills at the same time!

Day 1: Exploring coding with manipulatives

ü  Students will explore various OSMO coding kits to understand sequencing and stretch their ability to predict steps.

ü  Students will have fun giving mini Ozobot robot instructions with color patterned codes.

Day 2: Introduction to Hour of Code

ü  Students will explore Hour of Code resources and be introduced to sequencing, events and loops.

ü  Students will work on their problem solving skills on Ozobot challenges.

Day 3: Introduction to Scratch Jr.

ü  Students will create sequences of movements to create their own stories on Scratch Jr.

Day 4: Introduction to Scratch and Makey Makey

ü  Students will be introduced to Scratch programming to create music and animations.

ü  Students will be introduced to the Makey Makey and how we can turn materials that conduct electricity into remotes to control our programs.

Students will learn:

• Sequencing
• Logic
• Simple Conditionals
• Simple Loops

These lessons are designed to introduce kids to computer science and get them exciting about creating with technology, rather than just consuming.
